DES MOINES, Iowa - University of Louisville junior Andre Black advanced to the final of the men's triple jump to lead the Cardinals during the third day of competition at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships Friday at Drake Stadium.
Black, a native of Mobile, Ala., had a leap of 51 feet, 9.75 inches to finish tied for 11th in the qualifying round of action and clinch one of 12 spots in Saturday's triple jump final, which is set to begin at 1 p.m. CT. The 2007 NCAA indoor triple jump champion earned his top qualifying mark on his third and final attempt in the preliminary action. Arkansas junior Nkosinza Balumba had the top leap in the qualifying round with a mark of 53-02.25.
On the women's side, junior Seidre Forde withdrew from the qualifying round of the women's triple jump after she aggravated a preexisting leg injury earlier this week in preparation for the NCAA Championships. After struggling with the injury this week, the native of Green's St. George, Barbados, was examined by the on-site doctor, who determined competing could lead to further injury for Forde.
The 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships will conclude on Saturday with Black in the men's triple jump final at 1 p.m. CT, and with junior Jere' Summers will compete in the women's shot put final at 1:30 p.m.
On Thursday night, the Cards scored their first All-America performance of the week as redshirt freshman Michael Eaton finished 13th overall and was the sixth best American born athlete in the men's 10,000m run. A native of Bowling Green, Ky., Eaton is the Cards' first All-American in the 10,000m and the program's second All-American in a distance event, joining former Cardinal Wesley Korir's 2007 honor in the 5,000m.
