
Five Cardinals Earn All-BIG EAST Honors

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - Five University of Louisville softball players earned All-BIG EAST Conference honors as announced at the conference's annual championship banquet held at the Marriot Downtown Louisville on May 7. Senior Sarah Totten and sophomore Kristen Wadwell were selected to the second team, while junior Kassie Stanfill, sophomore Melissa Roth and freshman Colby Wherry were named to the third team.
Connecticut junior Micah Truax collected her second-consecutive BIG EAST softball Player of the Year honor DePaul sophomore Becca Heteniak was named BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year, while USF freshman Capri Catalano took Rookie of the Year. USF garnered BIG EAST Coaching Staff of the Year honors.
Totten, a four-year starter at first base from Louisville, Ky., is second on the team with a .322 batting average, 30 runs, 25 RBI. The Cards' number two hitter has tied a school single season record with 15 sacrifice bunts.
Kristen Wadwell, a sophomore pitcher from Sydney, Australia leads in the circle with a 17-12 record, a 2.24 ERA and 141 strikeouts in 212.2 innings pitched. She was an all-BIG EAST third team selection last year and was named the 2007 BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Player.
Roth, a sophomore catcher from Long Beach, Calif., catcher Melissa Roth who is batting .369 with 42 runs, 20 doubles, four triples and eight stolen bases.
Stanfill, a junior outfielder/pitcher from Goodlettsville, Tenn., is hitting .275 and is tied for second on the team with 25 RBI and is batting .333 with four doubles, 10 runs and 13 RBI in league play She also posted a 3-3 record with 37 strikeouts in 30.2 innings pitched.
Wherry, a freshman shortstop from Goodlettsville, Tenn., is the Cardinals' cleanup hitter, with a .281 batting average with six doubles and 20 RBI. In league play, she carried a .328 mark in league play with seven runs, four doubles and 13 RBI. She earned league Player of the Week Honors on March 31.
Quarterfinal play begins on May 8 at 10 a.m. when No. 3 seed Connecticut meets No. 6 seed Syracuse. The Huskies took two from the Orange on April 6 with 9-1 (five innings) and 7-6 triumphs. Game Two features No. 2 seed DePaul and No. 7 seed Pittsburgh at 12:30 p.m. The squads met three days ago, with the Blue Demons scoring a 4-1 Game One win, and the Panthers rebounding for a 7-3 Game Two victory. Top seed USF will face No. 8 seed Providence in Game Three at 4 p.m. The Bulls and the Friars closed the regular season against each other, with USF victorious in both games, 5-4 and 5-1. The final game of opening day pits the last two conference champions against one another, as No. 4 seed Notre Dame meets No. 5 seed Louisville at 6:30 p.m. The Fighting Irish swept the Cardinals 3-1 (eight innings) and 12-4 (five innings) on April 19.

CBS College Sports will air both semifinal games on May 9 and the title game on May 10. The first semifinal game will begin at 2:30 p.m., with the nightcap to follow at 5 p.m. The title game will begin at 5 p.m.
