LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville softball team split with No. 20/25 DePaul in a BIG EAST doubleheader Sunday at Ulmer Stadium. The Cards snapped a three-game conference losing streak with a 2-0 win in game one and the Blue Demons won the second 1-0.
In the first game of the day, which was televised live on ESPNU, the teams played through three scoreless innings before the Cardinals broke through with a 1-0 lead. Kaylyn Castillo led off the top of the third with a single, took second on Kristi Cunningham's sacrifice bunt and scored on Melissa Roth's team-leading 18th double of the season.
The Cardinals added another run in the third when Kassie Stanfill delivered a one-out single, stole second and crossed the plate on Castillo's base hit to make it a 2-0 game.
U of L had an opportunity to push more runs across in the fifth, when Kristi Cunningham singled, Roth was hit by a pitch and Chelsea Bemis reached on a fielder's choice to load the bases with one out. DePaul starter Becca Heteniak retired the next two batters to get out of the jam.
Louisville starting pitcher Kristen Wadwell (13-10) got the complete game win, scattering four hits and striking out two in her fifth shutout of the season. Castillo led the Cards offensively, going 2 for 3 with an RBI.
Heteniak (17-6) suffered her first career loss in BIG EAST play after giving up two earned runs on five hits and striking out five in six innings.
Game two also featured a pitcher's duel with the only run coming on a double steal.
Louisville starting pitcher Kristen Wadwell had only given up two hits and allowed two runners in scoring position through five innings when Amber Patton led off the sixth with a double and took third on Tara Voss' sacrifice bunt. Sandy Vojik walked to place runners on the corners with one out. Patton crossed the plate on a double steal for the only run of the game.
DePaul starter Lindsey Dean (7-2) got the complete game shutout win, scattering two hits and striking out three. The Blue Demons improve to 32-14 (9-5 BIG EAST).
Wadwell (13-11) took the loss, surrendering one earned run and striking out three in seven innings. Colby Wherry was 2 for 3 with a double.
U of L (24-18, 10-6) will travel to Indiana for a single game on April 23. The Cards will then resume BIG EAST Conference play with a twinbill at league-leader South Florida on April 26.
