LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Eastern Kentucky 7-0 to complete a doubleheader sweep at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center Wednesday. The Cards (15-4) defeated Xavier 7-0 earlier in the day. The win also gives Louisville a 13-1 record at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center this season.
U of L began the match by taking the doubles point. Sophomore David Simon and freshman Viktor Maksimcuk teamed to beat Lars Gratzki and Johannes John 8-4 at the top seed. Freshman Simon Childs and sophomore Kenneth Nordheim defeated Mel Segota and Vadim Ivanis 8-5 at No. 2 while sophomores James McArthur and Tye Myers combined for an 8-2 win over Fred Goncalves and Francisco Fontoura to complete the doubles sweep.
The Cardinals swept the singles matches in straight sets. No. 41 Austen Childs topped Gratzki 7-5, 6-0 at No. 1. Simon picked up a 7-6, 6-2 win over Segota at the two-spot. Maksimcuk beat Goncalves 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3. Simon Childs defeated John 6-2, 6-2 at the four-seed. Freshman Alejandro Calligari posted eighth-straight win with a 6-3, 6-2 decision over Ivanis at No. 5. Junior Robert Rotaru cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win over Fontoura at No. 6.
"I can only be happy when we win 18 out of 18 courts," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "The more we play outdoors, the better we play. I was especially happy with James McArthur and Tye Myers today at No. 3 doubles. That was a new team that I put together spontaneously and they worked out really well. I am also pleased with the confidence and energy Kenny Nordheim is bringing. He is a great complement with Simon Childs. James McArthur was our player of the match."
The Cardinals (15-4) are back in action on April 5 when the play Virginia Commonwealth in a neutral match at South Florida. U of L will take on BIG EAST Conference foe USF on April 6.
