TAMPA, Fla. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team lost to No. 29 VCU 4-1 Saturday in a neutral match played at South Florida. The Cards (15-5) will face USF Sunday.
The Rams took the doubles point to start the match. Louisville's Viktor Maksimcuk and David Simon picked up an 8-3 win at the top seed. VCU's Martin Schulhauser and Stepan Siska teamed to beat Simon Childs and Kenneth Nordheim 8-6 at No. 3. Bobo Delemark and Thibaut Charron outlasted Austen Childs and James McArthur 9-8 (7-5) at No. 2 to clinch the point.
In singles, Schulhauser topped Simon 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2. Lacombe defeated Maksimcuk 6-2, 6-2 at the three-spot. Ripoll picked up a 6-4, 6-2 win over Robert Rotaru at No. 6. The other two matches were suspended.
Simon Childs posted a 6-3, 6-4 win over Lindgren at the four-spot for Louisville's only point.
"We definitely should have won the doubles point after being up 4-0 in the tiebreaker, but ended up losing. Dropping the doubles point really took the wind out of our sails and gave the momentum to VCU," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "VCU had some injuries earlier this season, but is back at full strength and it showed. Hopefully we've had a chance to get acclimated to the 85 degree heat and we'll regroup tomorrow."
The Cardinals (15-5) will face South Florida Sunday afternoon.
