Summers, Savage Lead Cards on Day One of Tyson Invitational

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - Throwers Jere' Summers and ZeNai Savage earned NCAA provisional qualifying marks and top five finishes in the weight throw to lead the University of Louisville track and field program on the first day of competition of the prestigious Tyson Invitational Friday at the Randal Tyson Center on the campus of the University of Arkansas.
Summers, a native of Oakland, Calif., and a transfer from Cal State Northridge, had a throw of 63 feet, 8.25 inches, which matches her second best mark ever and the fifth-best throw in school history. She finished second overall in the field of 34 of the top collegiate throwers in the nation.
Savage, a senior captain from Indianapolis, Ind., finished fourth overall with a career-best throw of 62-07.75, nearly two feet better than her previous best throw from earlier this season. The throw is Savage's first career NCAA provisional qualifying mark in the weight throw. She also has an NCAA provisional qualifying performance in the shot put in 2008, joining Summers as the Cards' only NCAA qualifiers this season in two events.
Also competing on Friday at Arkansas was sophomore Amaka Omenyinma in the long, while the men's team had junior Steven Hnat in the shot put and junior Rudon Bastian in the long jump. The Cards also have athletes competing at Indiana's Hoosier Hills Invitational today in Bloomington, Ind.
The final day of action at the Tyson Invitational is set to begin Saturday at 11 a.m. ET. Following this weekend, the Cards will compete at the BIG EAST Indoor Championships on Feb. 23-24 in New York City.
