LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville men's tennis team defeated visiting Western Kentucky 7-0 Friday afternoon at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Hilltoppers start 0-1.
"We had a team goal in doubles of 100 percent holds," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "We achieved that to help us win the doubles point cleanly. The word I would use to describe our singles play today is `efficient.' Several guys were taking care of each point, staying focused and playing well. I told the guys that's what good players do and that's what I expect of them."
The Cards began the match by sweeping doubles play. The freshman duo of Austen Childs and Simon Childs defeated Chad True and Andy True 8-3 at the top seed. At No. 2 doubles, senior Pablo Camacho and junior Robert Rotaru teamed to beat Currie Martin 8-1. Freshman Alejandro Calligari and sophomore Ben Clos posted an 8-2 win over Thomas Krug and Quinn Saine at the three-spot.
In singles action, sophomore David Simon defeated Chad True 6-3, 6-1 at the top seed. Simon Childs beat Krug 6-2, 6-7, 7-6 at No. 2. Freshman Viktor Maksimcuk picked up a 6-2, 6-4 win over Andy True at No. 3. Sophomore Kenneth Nordheim topped Martin 6-2, 6-4 at the four-seed. Calligari registered a 6-2, 6-2 win over Swanson at No. 5. Sophomore Tim Barnoud beat Saine 6-2, 6-2 at the six-spot.
Calligari was named Cardinal `Tennis Player of the Match' with his wins at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles.
The Cardinals will play the second part of the double header against Dayton at 6 p.m. at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
