LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville Men's Tennis team dropped their first match of the season, falling 5-2 to No. 16 Tennessee Friday night at the Bass Rudd Tennis Center. The Cards had matched a school-best start of 6-0 set in 1998 before falling to the Volunteers, who improved to 7-0 on the season.
"Obviously I'm disappointed anytime we lose at the Bass-Rudd tennis center," said U of L head coach Rex Ecarma. "I think our winning percentage at home is between 90-95%. Tennessee is a good team, they are the real deal and a favorite in the SEC. I have to give them credit, we pushed a lot but they gave up no ground. Our No. 1 doubles team showed they will be nationally ranked this semester and I thought Austin (Childs) showed he is the best freshman in the country."
The Cards fell behind early as the Vols took the doubles point to start the match. U of L's team of freshmen Austin Childs and Simon Childs defeated Tennessee's Kaden Hansel and J.P. Smith 8-7 to improve to 6-0 on the season as the Cards' top seed. Louisville's second seeded team of sophomores Kenneth Nordheim and James McArthur fell 8-2 to Boris Conkic and Davey Sandgren. The Volunteers secured the point with a win at No. 3 as Jeremy Tweedt and Matteo Fago defeated junior Robert Rotaru and senior Pablo Camacho 8-6.
In singles, top seeded Austin Childs continued his great play by defeating Kaden Hensel 6-4, 6-2. David Simon was beaten by J.P. Smith 6-1, 6-0 in the No. 2 seeded match. At No. 3, Simon Childs fell 6-1, 6-4 to Boris Conkic. The Cards bounced back in the fourth seeded match as freshman Viktor Macsimcuk defeated Davey Sandgren 6-1, 7-5. At the five-spot, junior Robert Rotaru was downed by Matteo Fago 7-5, 7-5. Freshman Alejandro Calligari lost a tough one to Chris Racz 6-4, 7-6(5) to finish out the match.
The Cards continue their nine-match home stand Feb. 14 against No. 50 Middle Tennessee at 5:00 at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
