BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The University of Louisville rowing team's second varsity eight crew earned a solid head race win over the host Indiana Hoosiers' first varsity eight crew on Saturday at Lake Lemon.
The Cards' second varsity eight crew of freshman Anna Kirk (coxswain), freshman Chelsea Haack, sophomore Lauren Mensch, junior Katie Scordo, senior Laura Cers, junior Samantha Seldon, sophomore Sarah Fiske, junior Anna Zwanzig and senior Jill Reeves covered the 5,100-meter course in a time of 14 minutes, 58 seconds to finish 10 seconds better than IU's varsity eight crew in at 15:08.
The Hoosiers' second varsity eight crew was third at 15:15, followed by IU's third varsity eight boat at 15:27. The Cards' third varsity eight boat with junior Kimberly Feinberg (coxswain), freshman Chelsea Reeves, junior Ruthie Fligor, sophomore Annie Stadig, sophomore Brittany Hall, sophomore Kira Lawson, sophomore Ashley Anderson, sophomore Allison Siu and sophomore Shannon Elias was fifth at 16:31, followed by Indiana's novice eight boat at 18:08 and U of L's novice eight boat at 20:19.
"It was a great opportunity to get out and test ourselves against our regional competition," said Cards' assistant coach and novice head coach Andrea Buch. "Everyone was able to learn a lot and we will be able to build on this race moving forward."
The Cards and Hoosiers also contested three four-minute pieces and one three-minute pieces.
"The second varsity eight put together a solid race for the first piece of the morning with tight racing and I was pleased to see them competitive with Indiana's top boat," said Cards' head coach Laura Fogt, who is in Boston with the Cards' varsity eight crew, which will compete in Sunday's Championship 8+ event at the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta. "This was certainly a great starting point. During the shorter pieces we lost our form and ultimately lost speed. This is an area we must continue to improve. When you line up against competitive crews such as Indiana, you cannot afford to have `off' strokes as your timing, technique and power must be at 100 percent. IU showed great depth today and that is something we will continue to strive towards.
"This was a great opportunity for us to gage our speed. We saw some positive things and we were able to see some areas that need work. In two weeks, we travel to the Head of the Hooch where we can determine if improvements were made."
The Cards will close the weekend with its varsity eight crew in the Championship 8+ event at the Head of the Charles tomorrow afternoon in Boston. Following this weekend's events, the Cards will compete at the Head of the Hooch on Nov. 1.
