Louisville, Ky. - The Villanova Wildcats used a balanced attack and a penalty kick to defeat the 10th ranked Louisville Cardinals 3-2 Saturday night in Cardinal Park. The Cardinals fall to 9-3-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league play while the Wildcats improve to 6-7-2 overall and 3-3-1 in BIG EAST play.
"I am very disappointed in the loss," said head coach Ken Lolla. "I am disappointed because I thought we didn't play our best. We were slow starting and we paid for it. I have to give them credit, they were able to take advantage of our slow start."
Villanova had several chances early on as they controlled possession and kept the ball in Louisville's defensive half. In the 12th minute, Villanova midfielder Joe Taylor took the ball just inside the 18 and fired a shot towards the goal, but it was denied as Andre Boudreaux dove to his right and deflected the ball away. Just moments later the Wildcats converted as Michael Seamon's pass found Farris Fakhoury who shot into the right side of the net.
The Cards evened it up in the 24th minute off a beautiful goal by Freddie Braun. Aaron Clapham hit a free kick into the box from about 50 yards out, and Braun rose above the defenders to head the ball perfectly over Villanova goalkeeper Chris Bresnahan and into the goal.
Villanova took back the lead just after the start of the second half when they were awarded a penalty kick after the Cardinals committed a foul in the box. Joe Taylor fired the shot into the right side netting to put the Wildcats up 2-1. Villanova extended their lead to 3-1 in the 54th minute when Michael Seamon dribbled in and ripped a shot from just outside the 18 past a diving Boudreaux.
Louisville brought it back to 3-2 in the 63rd minute as Colin Rolfe dribbled down the middle, outmaneuvering a Villanova defender with a great move and then firing on goal. The shot was stopped by Bresnahan but Rolfe found the rebound and sent it into the back of the net. Louisville outshot the Wildcats 16-5 in the game. Goalkeeper Chris Bresnahan had two saves while Andre Boudreaux had one.
The Cardinals face a tough road test on Wednesday as they travel to Bloomington, Ind. to take on rival Indiana. The game kicks off at 7:30 p.m.
