Louisville, Ky. - Highly touted freshman Monique Reid was no stranger to Louisville women's basketball. She was a ball girl for the Cardinals and attended all the summer camps. So when Jeff Walz took over as head coach at Louisville, Reid wasted no time committing to the Cardinals.
This season Reid is excited about helping this year's squad in surpassing last season's record breaking year. Her strong physical presence and her mental toughness make her an asset to the Cardinal roster. While transitioning to collegiate basketball, the Fern Creek High School standout has made personal strides through summer workouts and into the fall academic year.
"I think I've improved on my weight, my stamina, and just being more mature," said Reid. "College matures you a lot, even though we have academic advisors we still have to do the work. I think I have matured a lot."
In her four seasons at Fern Creek, Reid scored over 2,000 points and pulled down over 1,000 rebounds to make her the all-time leader in both categories. She finished her senior year averaging 31.6 points and 19.2 rebounds per game. She earned first team all-state honors her junior and senior years. She was named the Player of the Year by the Associated Press her senior year.
A true team player, Reid is willing to accept whatever role she is challenged to fulfill. She has tremendous confidence in this season's line-up and looks forward to building upon last year's success.
"I have to go out there and work hard on both ends, doing whatever coach tells me to," said Reid. "If he wants me to go in there and pass the ball then I will. I will do anything to help the team."
While Reid has not officially declared a major, she anticipates earning a bachelor degree in a physical education related field. She has volunteered with a local Special Olympics basketball team and enjoyed being able to coach. The experience has her leaning towards coaching one day. Her ultimate goal is to become a head coach.
Her aggressive style of play allows her to draw fouls in the lane, while Reid's ability to attack the basket from the wing makes her an offensive threat. When asked what she most looks forward to this season, she replied simply, "a national championship".
