
No. 16 Louisville Upends Providence 2-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Providence 2-1 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Sunday. The Cardinals improve to 7-5 (2-1 BIG EAST) while Providence falls to 7-4 (1-1).
The Friars took a 1-0 lead at the 11:35 when Nellie Poulin connected on Jessica Lane's free hit.
With less than 10 minutes remaining in the first half, Louisville senior Janelle Avila dribbled into the circle and delivered the tying goal.
The teams entered halftime tied 1-1 with Providence outshooting the Cards 7-3 and holding a 3-1 edge in penalty corners.
The Cardinals pulled ahead 2-1 just two minutes into the second half when freshman Nicole Youman sent a pass across the cage to senior Casey Diener who sent the ball past PC goalkeeper Rachel Chamberlain.
Louisville outshot Providence 6-1 in the second half and finished the game with a 9-8 edge in shots. The teams had three corners each in the game. Cardinal goalkeeper senior Marie-Claire Heller posted six saves while Chamberlain had four stops in the cage for Providence.
U of L (7-5, 2-1) will play host to BIG EAST opponent Rutgers Friday, Oct. 5 at 3 p.m., and No. 19 Virginia.
