LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - University of Louisville senior Janelle Avila scored two goals as the 16th-ranked Cardinals defeated visiting Vermont 4-2 Sunday afternoon at Trager Stadium.
The teams traded shots throughout the first part of the game before the Cardinals broke through on a penalty corner. Avila rifled a shot past Vermont's Kristen Heavens to make it a 1-0 game at the 14:53 mark. Junior Lauren Schaefer and freshman Tuli Lim assisted on the goal.
The Cards scored three more goals in a three minute span to take a 4-0 lead into halftime. Avila connected on a pass from senior Allison Maffitt to make it a 2-0 game at the 22:20 mark. A minute later, Schaefer set up another penalty corner goal, this time to senior Casey Diener. Freshman Nicole Youman delivered the final Louisville goal from the top of the circle at the 25:17 mark.
Louisville entered the break up 4-0, outshooting the Catamounts 14-3 with six corners to Vermont's one.
The Catamounts regrouped at halftime and applied offensive pressure the second half to outshoot the Cards 7-2 and were awarded three corners to Louisville's one. Kelly McClintock put Vermont on the scoreboard when she intercepted a Louisville 16-yard hit and delivered a shot from the top of the circle past Louisville goalkeeper senior Marie-Claire Heller at the 53:57 mark.
Vermont's Kim Striegler added another goal with under three minutes remaining in the game. Wendy Carbone and Kate Lipton assisted on the penalty corner goal to make it a 4-2 game.
In the game, the Cardinals outshot the Catamounts 16-10 and held a 7-4 penalty corner advantage. Heller recorded four saves in the win. Heavens collected seven saves in the cage for Vermont (6-3).
"We had a great team attack effort in the first half," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "We were also tested in the second half by Vermont's pressure. I was pleased that we were able to overcome the speed of the Vermont forward line and their big hitters out of the backfield."
U of L (4-4) will open BIG EAST play against Syracuse Friday, Sept. 21 at 3 p.m. at Trager Stadium. The Cards will play host to Saint Louis Sunday at 1 p.m.
