EAST LANSING, Mich. - - The No. 14 Louisville Cardinals lost 2-0 to No. 4 Duke in the final game of the Champions Invitational Tournament hosted by Michigan State. The Cards fall to 0-2, while the Blue Devils improve to 1-1.
Amie Survilla connected on an assist from Marcy Burns to put the Blue Devis up 1-0 midway through the first half. Duke entered halftime with a 6-3 shot advantage and a 3-2 edge in penalty corners.
The Cardinals went on the offensive in the second half, outshooting the Blue Devils 9-3 with a 4-1 advantage in corners, but the Duke defense held strong and maintained the shutout. Susan Ferger added an insurance goal off of Brooke Patterson's assist at the 55:45 mark to make it a 2-0 contest.
In the match, U of L outshot Duke 12-9 and had six corners to the Blue Devils' four. Senior midfielder Janelle Avila paced the Cardinals' offensive attack with five shots. Senior goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller posted four saves in the game.
"I am really proud of how were able to play five freshman - six on the weekend - and get them up to the speed of the game," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Now that we have game-time opportunities, I think our team is finally getting the idea of the pace and what our identity is. This was a great weekend to build on as we move on into the season. We've got to be able to finish the drill on both ends of the field, the attack and the defensive circle."
Louisville will travel to Muncie, Ind. to face Ball State Friday at 3 p.m.
