The University of Louisville finished 28th in the U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup standings, its highest-ever ranking with 654 points. Stanford captured its 13th straight Cup, scoring 1429.00 points. The Directors' Cup is presented annually by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA), United States Sports Academy and USA Today to the best overall collegiate athletics programs in the country.
The 2006-07 U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup winners were announced at NACDA's 42nd Annual Convention in Orlando, Florida, and the four winning institutions -- one in each of the NCAA divisions (I, II, and III), and the NAIA - were awarded with their U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cups. The U.S. Sports Academy Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. The United States Sports Academy, based in Daphne, Alabama, is the program's sponsor. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports - 10 women's and 10 men's.
The Cardinal football team (No. 6 AP, No. 7 USA Today) posted a 12-1 record and defeated Wake Forest 24-13 in the FedEx Orange Bowl, the Cards' first-ever BCS contest. U of L's baseball team advanced to the College World Series in Omaha for the first time in school history. Among other highlights of this year: Louisville was one of just seven schools with both it's men's and women's basketball teams ranked in the final AP poll. The Cardinals' women's soccer (No. 22) and men's cross country (15th) teams both earned their first NCAA Championship appearances ever at U of L. The Cards' field hockey team was ranked 15th nationally and the volleyball team reached its ninth NCAA Tournament. Swimming and diving and Men's tennis were also represented in the NCAA post-season. U of L athletes won two national titles in men's indoor track, which finished in a tie for 10th in the nation. The men's outdoor track team finished seventh at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
