OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The nationally ranked University of Louisville rowing team opened the 2007 spring racing season in strong fashion with a pair of varsity wins over Minnesota on Sunday in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
The Cards, which closed 2006 ranked No. 20 in the final USRowing/CRCA Varsity Eights Coaches Poll, earned a Varsity 8+ win and a Varsity 4+ win over the Golden Gophers. The Cards' Varsity 8+ crew completed the 2,000-meter course with a time of 6 minutes, 38.40 seconds to defeat Minnesota, which finished eighth in the Varsity 8+ race at the 2006 NCAA Rowing Championships, which finished with a time of 6:39.20.
In the Varsity 4+ race, the Cards' earned a three-second win over the Gophers with a time of 7:44.50 to Minnesota's 7:44.50.
"It's a great start to our season to earn two varsity wins against a very talented program like Minnesota," said UofL head coach Richard Ruggieri. "I'm proud of the effort from our team. It's a real challenge to prepare for a strong opponent in such a short time and I think we did a great job with that. We also showed great speed in our Varsity 8+ boat and it's very encouraging to see that in only a few days on the water."
In three other races, the Cards lost to the Gophers in the 2nd Varsity 8+ race, the 2nd Varsity 4+ race and the Novice 8+ race.
Up next, the Cards will go on the road to Knoxville on March 24 to face Tennessee, which finished 12th overall at last year's NCAA Championships.
