Cardinal Rowing Wins Varsity 4+, Novice 8+ Races Against Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville rowing team earned Varsity 4+ and Novice 8+ wins over the University of Tennessee on Saturday morning on Fort Loudoun Lake in Knoxville, Tenn.
In the first race of the day, the Cards won the Varsity 4+ race with the Lady Vols with a time of 7 minutes, 20.8 seconds, while the Lady Vols' `A' crew was second with a time of 7:24.3 followed by Tennessee's `B' crew at 7:32.7. The victory for the Cards was the first in a Varsity 4+ race over the Lady Vols since 2003.
The Cards' win in the Novice 8+ race came as UofL overcame an early two-seat disadvantage to earn a seven-second victory with a time of 7:07.0 to the Lady Vols 7:14.0.
In the showdown of nationally ranked Varsity 8+ crews, the Lady Vols jumped out to an early lead and then held off a strong late charge by the Cards for a win of 4.6 seconds. The No. 9 ranked Lady Vols covered the Fort Loudoun Lake race course in a time of 6:27.5, while the 19th-ranked Cards finished with a time of 6:32.1.
In the other two races of the day, the Cards lost a 2nd Varsity 8+ race and a 2nd Novice 8+ race to the Lady Vols.
"It was some great racing against an incredibly strong opponent in Tennessee," said UofL head coach Richard Ruggieri. "I thought our women rowed well, but we certainly need to improve in some areas as we move forward into the season and I think we'll do that."
Up next, the Cardinal rowing team will have three weeks off from competition traveling to Stanford, Calif., for the Windermere Real Estate Rowing Classic on April 14-15 and facing No. 2 ranked and reigning national champion California, No. 7 Washington and No. 12 Stanford.
