Red and Black Awards Announced

Louisville, Ky - Three University of Louisville athletes, track's Arthur Turland, rower Jen Allen, and soccer defender Amy Seng, were named as the recipients of the third annual National City Bank Postgraduate Scholarships at the Red and Back Banquet on Sunday. The three earned post graduate scholarships honoring graduating U of L student-athletes who have excelled in the classroom and in competition while demonstrating positive character and citizenship.
"We are thrilled with the quality of candidates and it was a difficult decision," said Charles P. Denny, president and chief executive officer of National City Bank of Kentucky. "The list of candidates was so deserving that we added an additional award, increasing the number to three this year. We know that Arthur, Jen and Amy are fine young people who will make a positive impact on others as they pursue their studies and careers."
A native of Tiverton, Ont., Arthur Turland is a mechanical engineering major. He is a three-time BIG EAST champion with back-to-back indoor weight throw titles in 2006 and 2007 and the 2006 outdoor hammer throw title. He will he*ll look to defend that title in May at the 2007 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships in Storrs, Conn. The school record holder in the weight throw and the javelin, Turland finished second in the weight throw at the 2006 NCAA Mideast Regional earning an automatic bid to the NCAA Outdoor Championships where he finished 19th in the nation. During the 2007 indoor season, Turland won three weight throw championships and currently ranks in the Top 10 nationally with his school record throw of 69 feet on Feb. 10. Turland has been a key component to the U of L's move among the nation's elite in track and field over the last two seasons, as well as a strong point-scorer in the Cards* runner-up finishes in the 2007 BIG EAST Indoor Championships and the 2006 BIG EAST Outdoor Championships.
A four-year letter-winner for the Cards, Arthur is married to Emily Turland, a senior thrower for the U of L women's track and field. When not competing or studying, he has volunteered with the Eagle Scouts, tutored at Hartstern Elementary School and set up a recycling program at U of L athletics.
A native of Cecilia, Ky., Jen Allen is four-year letter-winner for the nationally ranked Louisville rowing program and a team captain for the Cardinals in 2006-07. During U of L's 2006 fall racing season,Allen competed in the Cards' 2nd Varsity 8+ boat which finished second in a field of 22 at the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta, finishing behind only the Cards* 'A' boat while defeating the 'A' boats from Texas, Kansas, Kansas State SMU and Tulsa. In all, she competed in four events for the Cards at Head of the Oklahoma as U of L won the Ackerman Cup, awarded to the collegiate points champion at the event. In the 2006 spring racing season, she spent the final three events in the Cards* 2nd Varsity 8+ boat leading her crew a victory in the 'A' Final at the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships, a runner-up finish in the program*s first BIG EAST Conference Championship regatta and second place in the 'B' finals at the NCAA South/Central Region Sprints. She also rowed in the Cards' 2nd Varsity 8+ boat that knocked off nationally-ranked Minnesota to open the 2006 season. She is a Trustee Scholar, a Dean's Scholar and a member of the Honors Program. She is also active CardsCare where she volunteered for Habitat for Humanity and Kosair Children's Festival of Lights.
Seng, a senior from Centennial, Colorado is majoring in sport administration with a minor in business administration and was a first team CoSIDA Academic All-American for women's soccer. She is known for being an intelligent, disciplined player and "an extraordinary role model for all of the younger players in our program" according to her coach Karen Ferguson.
Seng started all 77 matches in her career - more than anyone in school history, and played every minute of every game with the exception of one, missing 24 minutes during a contest her junior season.
She was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-District IV First Team. Seng was a Third Team CoSIDA Academic All-American last season aftermaking the All-District First Team. She was a member of the All-DistrictThird Team as a sophomore. Freshman are not eligible to be on the teams. Seng was part of a senior class that established or tied 15 school records, including wins in a single season with a record 13 this season and career wins with 43. She also was named Third team All-C-USA in 2004. She is a member of the Student Athlete Advisory Committee, volunteered at the Boys' and Girls' Clubs and CardsCare where she participated in soccer clinics and volunteered at Ronald McDonald House and local soup kitchens.
"We are very pleased to have National City's partnership with us in this program," said U of L athletic director Tom Jurich. "Arthur, Jen and Amy represent all that is good about student-athletes at the University of Louisville."
