
Five Field Hockey Players Earn BIG EAST Honors

SYRACUSE, N.Y. - - Five University of Louisville field hockey players earned BIG EAST Conference honors as announced at the league banquet Friday evening. Senior Janelle Avila and freshman Nicole Youman were selected to the first team, while seniors Marie-Claire Heller and Allison Maffitt and junior Lauren Schaefer were named to the second team.
Avila, a senior midfielder from North Kingstown, R.I., is a three-time all-conference first team member. She is currently third on the team with 18 points (7G, 4A). She stands at second on the school's career points list with 109 and is also second with 40 career goals.
Youman, a midfielder from Sydney Australia is second n the team with 24 points. She is second on the team with eight goals and tied for the lead with eight assists.
Heller, a goalkeeper from Chapel Hill, N.C. is a three-time all-conference team member. She holds a 1.63 goals-against average and three shutouts on the season.
Maffitt, a forward from Houston, Texas, leads the Cardinals with 28 points (11G, 6A). She also leads the team with five game-winning goals.
Schaefer, a junior defender from Millersville, Pa., is tied for the team lead with eight assists. She also has four goals for 16 points, placing her fourth on the team.
The 11th-ranked Cardinals (14-5) went 5-1 in BIG EAST Conference play, clinching a share of the regular season title along with Connecticut. U of L earned the second seed in the conference tournament and will face third-seeded 20th-ranked Providence (13-7) in the opening game Saturday at 11 a.m. at Syracuse's J.S. Coyne Field.
