
Heller Named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - University of Louisville field hockey player Marie-Claire Heller was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 8. Allison Maffitt was selected to the league honor roll.
Heller, a senior goalkeeper from Chapel Hill, N.C., registered a shutout against BIG EAST opponent Rutgers and allowed only one goal to No. 19 Virginia to help the Cards to a 2-0 record on the weekend. Heller posted six saves - three in each game (.857 save percentage) and a 0.51 goals-against average.
Maffitt, a senior forward from Houston, Texas, scored three goals on the weekend. After scoring in the 4-0 Rutgers win, Maffitt accounted for all of the Cardinals' scoring - including the game-winner - in the 2-1 overtime against No. 19 Virginia. Maffitt now leads the team with eight goals and 18 points on the season.
The Cardinals (9-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) are back in action with a midweek matchup at Ohio State, Wednesday, Oct. 10 at 3 p.m. Ohio State owns a 13-3 lead in the series, but five out of the last six meetings have been decided in one or more overtimes (two have gone to penalty strokes). The Buckeyes have won the last three games, while the Cards won the previous three.
