LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The 17th-ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated visiting Rutgers 4-0 in a BIG EAST Conference matchup Friday afternoon at Trager Stadium. The Cardinals improve to 8-5 (3-1 BIG EAST) while Rutgers drops to 7-6 (0-3).
"I was very happy with the way we set the tone early on and maintained our game plan throughout the ups and downs of the game - against a very good Rutgers team that can disrupt the flow of the game at any time," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin.
The Cards went on the attack early when senior Allison Maffitt notched her team-leading sixth goal of the season, connecting on senior Janelle Avila's feed from the left side of the cage just three minutes into the game.
Avila set up freshman Julie Barton's goal with a dish from the right side of the circle to make it a 2-0 game at the 24:18 mark.
Two minutes later, Avila delivered a pass inside the circle to Barton who combined with senior Missy Briery to give the Cards a 3-0 lead.
U of L took the 3-0 lead into the break, outshooting Rutgers 6-2 and holding a 2-1 edge in penalty corners.
Senior Casey Diener capped the scoring at the 60:49 mark in the game when she connected on a rebound off the pads of Rutgers goalkeeper Rosalyn Wentko.
In the game, Louisville outshot Rutgers 16-4 and had 10 corners to the Scarlet Knights' two. U of L senior Marie-Claire Heller got the shutout win with three saves. Sophomore Heather Bustanoby also combined for the shutout.
Wentko collected nine stops in the game. Rutgers (7-6) will play No. 19 Virginia (6-5) Saturday at 2 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
The Cardinals (8-5) will face the Cavaliers Sunday at 2 p.m. at Trager Stadium.
