MILWAUKEE, WI - the University of Louisville women's tennis team upset 36th-ranked Iowa in Milwaukee. The Cardinals dropped the doubles point, but regained the lead during singles play. Louisville, shorthanded due to illness, scrambled to defeat the Hawkeyes, 4-3.
"In my thirteen years of caoching, the is one of the biggest and most special wins I have witnessed. To beat a ranked Big Ten team, which will be int the top two or three in its league with just five players is an unbelievable accomplishment," said Greg Davis, U of L head coach.
In doubles play, Louisville's lack of numbers caused them to lose the doubles point. But it was no walkover as Robyn White and Natalie Laskowski, were able to beat Hillary Mintz and Kelcie Klockenga 8-3. Iowa's Merel Beelen and Jennifer Barnes won by default, as Jacqueline Lee and Kayla Berry defeated Bianca Gorbea and Natalie Baez, 8-2.
In singles play, The Cardinals had to drop No. 6 singles by default, which led the Hawkeyes to a 2-0 lead. Louisville evened the score, with Jo-Anne van Aerde's victory over Kelcie Klockenga, 7-5, 6-0. Bianca Gorbea dropped her first set but the tiny sophomore beat Kayla Berry's 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Iowa fought back and took a 3-2 lead when Baez couldn't hold on to her lead over Beelen, falling 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Natalie Laszkowski took Mintz to three after dropping her first set, winning 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, which evened the score to 3-3. Louisville clinched the match with a gutty win at No. 1 by Robyn White in a marathon tiebreaking match, 6-3, 1-6, 7-6 (7-3).
"Robyn clinched the match for us winning 7-6 in the third after being down 4-1. What a tremendous heart she has," said David. "Two wins this weekend is more than I could ask for and I am extremely proud of this team."
