
Softball's Catherine Bishop Earns Academic Honors

University of Louisville pitcher Catherine Bishop been named to the 2006 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America Softball third team. She becomes the first U of L softball player to earn Academic All-America honors.
Bishop, a junior from Adelaide, Australia, carries a 3.43 GPA in biology. She was named 2006 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and earned first team all conference honors. Bishop compiled a 30-7 record as a junior, setting a school record for single season wins and tying the record for career shutouts with 25. She led the conference and was ranked fourth in the nation with a 0.78 ERA. Bishop was named BIG EAST pitcher of the week four times, including the final three weeks of the season.
To be nominated, student-athletes must be at least a sophomore starter or significant reserve and carry a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or higher. Team members are selected by a vote of the members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) within the district.
U of L finished the 2006 season with a program-best 45-11 record. Louisville won the BIG EAST regular season title and earned its third consecutive NCAA tournament at-large bid. After appearing the national rankings for the first time in school history, the Cardinals closed the year ranked No. 19 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll and No. 18 in the USA Today/NFCA softball poll.
