
Cardinals Finish Second at BIG EAST Rowing Championships

WORCESTER, Mass. - In its first venture into a conference championship regatta, the University of Louisville rowing program finished second overall behind back-to-back champion Notre Dame at the 2006 BIG EAST Rowing Championships on Sunday at Lake Quinsigamond.
The Cards scored 103 points overall while the Fighting Irish led the field of nine teams with 122 points to successfully defend their 2005 title. Syracuse was third with 76 points while Rutgers finished fourth with 73 points.
U of L earned three second-place finishes in its six racing events. The Cards were second in the Varsity 8+ Grand Final with a time of 6 minutes, 34.83 seconds to finish behind Notre Dame at 6:28.32, and were second to the Irish in the Second Varsity 8+ Grand Final with a time of 6:46.74. Louisville's third second-place finish was in the Varsity 4+ Grand Final with a time of 7:40.41 while Notre Dame again led the way with a time of 7:33.
"I'm really pleased with the effort of our team in our inaugural BIG EAST Championship," said U of L coach Richard Ruggieri. "It really opened our eyes to what we must do to accomplish our goals, and we're truly very pleased with the effort of our athletes today. Finishing as the runner-up and scoring more than 100 points in our first year in the BIG EAST is a great accomplish and it gives us something great to build on."
Along with the three second-place finishes, the Cards also earned a fourth-place finish in the Novice 8+ Grand Final, a fourth-place finish in the Novice 4+ Grand Final and a fifth-place finish in the Second Varsity 4+ Grand Final.
Up next, the Cardinal rowing team will compete at the NCAA South/Central Regional Championships on May 13-14 in Oak Ridge, Tenn., and will attempt to earn U of L's first-ever bid to the NCAA Rowing Championships on May 26-28 in West Windsor, N.J.
