
Cardinals' Novice 8+ Crew Knocks Off Tennessee

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville rowing team's Novice 8+ crew earned a strong win over Southeastern Conference foe Tennessee, while the Cards dropped three varsity races to the Lady Vols on Saturday morning on Fort Loudoun Lake.
The Cards' Novice 8+ crew of coxswain Jessica Smith, Mallory Hamman, Heidi Schomburg, Caryn Lasley, Chelsea Keller, Jill Reeves, Lisa Grace, Hannah Heffernan and Jamie Allen, completed the course in a time of 7 minutes, 35.09 seconds to edge the Lady Vols with a time of 7:41.70.
On the varsity side, Tennessee swept three dual races from U of L led by the Lady Vols' Varsity 8+ crew, ranked 12th in the preseason USRowing/CRCA Varsity Eight Coaches Poll released on March 13, which finished with a time of 6:48.41 compared to the Cards' 6:57.47. UT won the second Varsity 8+ race over Louisville with a time of 7:08.61 to the Cards' 7:22.23, and added a win in the Varsity 4+ race with a time of 8:06.79 to U of L's 8:22.70.
The fifth and final race of the day was the second Novice 8+ race won by the Lady Vols with a time of 7:55.63 while Louisville's crew of coxswain DeEtta Taylor, Anna Zwanzig, Shadea Mitchell, Kelly Dues, Eden Bridgeman, Amanda Thorsen, Ashley Ramby, Ashley Edwards and Erica Wells, finished with a time of 7:58.09.
"On the varsity side, we just ran into a faster team today," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "We will continue to work hard and build on the positives of today. This will be a good experience for our team and something we can use for improvement. For the novice crews, it was a good day and a couple of good races."
Up next, U of L will compete at the Indiana Open on April 8 in Indianapolis, Ind., where the Cards will face No. 2 California, No. 8 Wisconsin, Indiana and Purdue.
