
Softball Set for Georgia Southern Tournament

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team will travel to the state of Georgia for the first time in program history when the Cards go on the road to the Georgia Southern Tournament in Statesboro Feb. 17-19. The Cards will also face four teams they have never played: Maryland (0-0), Georgia Southern (1-5), Troy (0-0) and Charleston Southern (2-3-1).
Louisville is coming off of its most successful opening weekend ever, a 3-0 showing at Florida State's Early Bird Classic. U of L defeated Nicholls State 9-0, host Florida State 12-3 and Samford 3-1 to claim the tournament title.
Junior left fielder Candi Hicks was named tournament MVP after batting .875 (7 for 8) with seven runs and four RBIs. She was also 4 for 4 in stolen bases on the weekend. Junior shortstop Courtney Moore joined Hicks on the all-tournament team. She posted a .667 batting average (6 for 9) with three doubles, a triple, six RBI and four runs scored in the tournament. Senior outfielder Leslie Garland also earned all-tournament honors, batting .375 (3 for 8) with a double and three runs scored. Senior catcher Lacy Wood was named to the all-tournament team after batting .333 with a double, a home run and five RBI. Freshman pitcher Kassie Stanfill rounded out the all-tournament team for Louisville after allowing one earned run for a 1.00 ERA and striking out seven batters while picking up her first collegiate win.
The Cards are off to a hot start offensively, batting .346 as a team with three home runs, three triples and two doubles in three games. Louisville outscored opponents 24-4, averaging 8 runs per game in its first three contests. In the circle, the Cardinals' pitching staff has a 1.50 ERA and is holding opponents to a .175 batting average.
