
Cardinals Rally to Win 64-48 Over Syracuse

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville (16-6, 7-4) women's basketball team held off a Syracuse rally for a 64-48 win in Freedom Hall on Sunday afternoon. Three Cardinals scored in double figures with Jazz Covington leading the way with 18 points. Katie Olson added 13 points and Connie Neal finished with 10. Missy Taylor led the Cardinals on the boards with 11 rebounds. Vaida Sipaviciute led Syracuse with 18 points.
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 10-2 lead capped off by a Neal three-pointer. Louisville led 16-8 at the 12:18 mark in the first half before a 7-0 run by the Orange to cut the lead to one with 9:24 left in the half. Covington's three-point play put the Cardinals back up by four. Syracuse then went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 24-19 at the 2:44 mark of the first half. Patrika Balow hit a jumper with 43 second remaining to end the Louisville scoring drought. Syracuse held a 24-21 lead at the break.
Syracuse scored on the first possession of the second half for a 26-21 lead. A Taylor three-pointer and two Covington foul shots tied the score at 28 with 18:06 remaining. There were two more ties and two lead changes before the Cardinals used a 20-2 run to go up 62-47 with 1:43 left to play. Covington scored nine of the Cardinals 20 points in the run.
Louisville finished the game shooting 38.5 percent from the field while Syracuse shot 36.2 percent from the field. The Cardinals finished the game shooting 66.7 percent from the foul line while Syracuse finished 41.7 percent. The Cardinals held a 45-38 advantage on the boards.
The Cardinals will be back in action on Wed. Feb. 15 as they travel to Queens to take on No. 24 St. John's at 7:00 p.m.
