Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Furman 89-44 Sunday afternoon in Freedom Hall. The Cardinals (4-0) had six players score in double figures with senior All-American candidate Jazz Covington led all scorers with 13 points. Sophomore Chauntise Wright recorded her first career double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
"We're obviously please to be 4-0 right now," said head coach Tom Collen. "We're off to a good start. We are excited about that and we kind of knew what we were getting into today with Furman. It was going to be on us in order to try to create energy and execute in order to get better. I thought there were times when we did that and there were times when we let down. Coaches are never really satisfied with where they are at. It's pretty early in the year and to be 4-0 and outscoring your opponents by 30, that's a pretty good start."
The Cardinals started the game with a 21-5 run that was capped off by a Angel McCoughtry steal and a trip to the foul line. Louisville recorded their largest lead of the half with 24 points in the 18th minute with a Jasmine Smith layup.
Louisville shot 48 percent in the first half while holding the Paladins to just 30 percent. The Cardinals outrebounded the Paladins 24-11 in the half.
The Cardinals continued to control the second half. In the ninth minute of the second half, they began a 25-7 run with a three-point shot by freshman Brandie Radde. The Cardinals built their biggest lead of the game with 49 points (89-40) at the 1:54 mark.
Louisville finished the game shooting 49.3 percent while holding Furman to 30 percent. The Cardinals pulled down 51 rebounds and forced the Paladins into 20 turnovers. McCoughtry and Covington each had four steals. Patrika Barlow led the Cardinals with eight assists.
The Cardinals will be back in action Friday, November 24 when they travel to UC-Santa Barbara to face the Gauchos at 10:00 p.m. EST.
