LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- - University of Louisville field hockey players Janelle Avila, Jessica Javelet, and Lisa Wasser and Jen Kastelic earned 2006 National Field Hockey Coaches Association Division I All-West Region honors. Avila, Javelet and Wasser were named to the first team, while Kastelic was selected to the second team.
"We are so excited and proud to be representing a strong West Region with four Louisville players," said U of L head coach Pam Bustin. "Jessica Javelet and Janelle Avila obviously have the stats and have each earned the honor for the second year in a row, which is a credit to both of them. I am also proud that Lisa Wasser and Jen Kastelic have gotten credit for all of the hard work and solid play they have contributed in this region. Because they don't necessarily have the stats on paper, it is more difficult for them to be recognized, but I am happy that their work has also been rewarded."
Javelet, the 2006 BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year was also the 2005 conference co-offensive player of the year. This season, she led the team with 18 goals and 46 points and was named Offensive Player of the Week twice and Defensive Player of the Week once. The two-time All-American and three-time all-conference selection owns Louisville's career records for goals (69), assists (38) and points (176). She also holds three single-season records: goals (30), assists (14), points (74) and two single-game records- goals (5) and points (12).
Avila, a three-year starter, finished the season second on the team with 26 points (7G, 13A). She garnered first team All-BIG EAST honors in 2005 and 2006 and was an All-West Region team member in 2005. This season, Avila moved to second on the school's career points list with 90 and stands at third with 33 career goals.
Kastelic, a four-year starter recently completed a career-best season with eight goals, six assists and 22 points to place her fourth on the team in scoring. She was also named to the 2006 All-BIG EAST second team.
Wasser posted a career-best nine goals and stands third on the team with 25 points. She started every game in her career, was a three-time team captain. Wasser was named to the All-West Region team in 2004 and has earned all-conference honors for three straight years.
U of L finished the 2006 season with a 12-8 record and a No. 15 ranking in the National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The Cards also notched a share of the BIG EAST regular season championship with a 5-1 record in league play.
