
Women's Basketball Downs Dayton 81-54 in Cardinal Classic

Louisville, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated Dayton 81-54 in the first round of the Cardinal Classic on Friday evening in Knights Hall. Four Cardinals scored in double figures with senior Helen Johnson leading the way with 18 points. Sophomore Angel McCoughtry finished with a double-double of 17 points and 11 rebounds. Jazz Covington and Chauntise Wright finished with 11 apiece.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 16-6 in the first six minutes of play. McCoughtry gave the Cards a 21 point lead with six minutes remaining in the first half with a three point play. The Flyers then went on a 9-0 run to get within 12 with 2:30 remaining in the first half. Covington stopped the run with a layup and the teams traded baskets until Dayton finished the half with a 5-0 run to cut the lead to 37-27 at the half.
Louisville finished the first half shooting 41 percent from the field and held a 24-19 rebounding edge. Covington and McCoughtry finished the half with 11 points apiece.
The Cardinals started the second half with a 7-0 run. McCoughtry scored on a jumper then converted a layup from a steal. Dayton turned the ball over on the next possession and Johnson nailed a three-pointer to go up 44-27 at the 18:41 mark of the half. The Cardinals continued to build a steady lead throughout the half. Louisville built their largest lead of 31 points (73-42) when freshman Brandie Radde nailed a three-pointer with 4:01 remaining.
Louisville finished the game shooting 44.6 percent from the field and 31.8 percent from behind the arc. Dayton finished the game shooting 32.8 percent from the field and 11.1 percent from behind the arc. The Cards finished the game with a 48-31 rebounding edge.
