LOUISVILLE, Ky. - - The University of Louisville softball team closed the fall season with a doubleheader split at Miami (Ohio) Saturday, Sept. 30. The Cards won the first game 12-3 while the RedHawks took the nightcap 3-2. On Friday night, U of L fell to visiting Morehead State 9-6 at Ulmer Stadium. Louisville finishes the fall season with a 3-2 record after posting a doubleheader win over Western Kentucky (6-2, 5-3) on Sept. 23.

In the game against Morehead, the Eagles utilized three hits, two walks and two Louisville errors to put up nine runs in the top of the first inning. Louisville got two runs back in the home half of the frame when Audrey Rendon singled and Courtney Moore delivered a two-run homer.
Rendon singled and scored on Kristi Cunningham's base hit in the fifth to make it a 9-3 game. The Cards rallied for three more runs in the bottom of the seventh when Rendon delivered her fourth hit of the game and Melissa Roth reached on an error. Sarah Totten followed with two-run double and Brooke McCrain's double sent Totten home for the final score of 9-6.
The Cards had 10 hits in the game and were led by Rendon's 4 for 4, three-run performance. Catherine Bishop shut down the Eagles, giving up only two hits and striking out 12 in 6.2 innings of relief. Cardinal starter Kristen Wadwell allowed nine runs, only two of them earned and struck out one.
Morehead had six total hits in the game. Starting pitcher Kari Quinn surrendered six runs, three of them earned on 10 hits and striking out seven.

The Cards jumped to a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Audrey Rendon singled and scored on Courtney Moore's base hit. Kristi Cunningham reached on a fielder's choice and came home on Melissa Roth's single.
The RedHawks responded in the second on Kimberly Williams' two-run single which scored Leslie Macedo and Alicia Hogl to tie the game at 2-2.
U of L regained the lead in the fourth when Rendon singled and Melissa Vascil walked to set up Cunningham's two-run single making it a 4-2 game.
Miami pulled within a run in the bottom of the inning when Hogl's triple scored Macedo who had led off the frame with a walk.
The Cards capitalized on four hits, three walks and two RedHawk errors to put up an eight-spot in the fifth. The inning was highlighted by Moore's two-run double and Roth's two-run homer. Miami came up empty in the home half of the inning and Louisville notched the 12-3 win on the eight-run mercy rule.
U of L had 10 hits in the game with Roth leading the way going 3 for 3 with three RBI and two runs. Rendon, Moored and Cunningham also had two hits apiece. Catherine Bishop got the win, giving up three runs on three hits and striking out four in 4.0 innings. Kristen Wadwell did not surrender a hit in one inning of work.

The runs were a little harder to come by for Louisville as Miami picked up a 3-2 win in the nightcap.
The Cardinals took a 2-0 lead in the fourth on Cunningham's two run double which scored Moore and Roth who reached on a single and a walk respectively.
Miami answered in the fifth when Macedo tied the game with a two-run double and scored on a Louisville error for the 3-2 win.
Offensively, the Cards had six hits in the game with Rendon and Moore each going 2 for 4. Kassie Stanfill took the loss, allowing three unearned runs and five hits while striking out six.
"Throughout the fall season we saw a lot of good things in all three areas of the game - pitching, offensively and defensively," said Sandy Pearsall. "We have a lot of work to do in all three of those areas as well before we will be ready to compete in the spring season."
U of L finished the 2006 season with a program-best 45-11 record. Louisville won the BIG EAST regular season title and earned its third consecutive NCAA tournament at-large bid. After appearing the national rankings for the first time in school history, the Cardinals closed the year ranked No. 19 in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll and No. 18 in the USA Today/NFCA softball poll. The Cards return 10 letterwinners and six starters from last year's team including 2006 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year Catherine Bishop and fellow all-BIG EAST selections Audrey Rendon and Courtney Moore.
