On the heels of winning their first Conference USA regular season title with a series sweep at DePaul, the Louisville Cardinals swept both softball weekly honors as Audrey Rendon was named the C-USA Hitter of the Week and Aja Sherman was named the league's Pitcher of the Week. This marks the fourth time this season that a pair of Cardinals swept the weekly awards. Sherman's honor is her fifth of the season and ninth of her career, while Rendon's honor is the second of her young career.
Rendon, a sophomore third baseman from Pueblo, Colo., posted a .563 batting average on the week (9-for-16) including an 8-for-13 effort in the Cardinals' series sweep of No. 25 DePaul. The sophomore also scored four runs and swiped five bases in the series that enabled the Cardinals to win their first C-USA regular season title. Rendon had a pair of three-hit efforts in the series in games one and three, respectively and also tripled in game three to increase her league-leading total to 10.
Sherman, senior from Las Vegas, collected her fifth C-USA Pitcher of the Week award this season after tossing a pair of two-hit shutouts at DePaul. Sherman's victory on Sunday clinched the regular season title for the Cardinals, their first in school history. In Saturday's game-one victory, the senior fanned 14 Blue Demons, which is just one off her career high. For the season, Sherman has set a new single-season school record with 237 strikeouts and 12 shutouts.
U of L 40-16 (20-4 C-USA) will travel to Tampa, Fla., for the C-USA Softball Championship May 12-14. The top-seeded Cardinals will earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of the USF/Houston game Thursday at 6:30 p.m. (Eastern).
