
Akubeze Finishes 25th in Long Jump at NCAA Mideast Regional

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - University of Louisville senior Ify Akubeze finished 25th in the long jump during the final day of competition Saturday at the 2005 NCAA Mideast Regional at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University.
Akubeze, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio, finished with a mark of 17 feet, 10.25 inches in her first career NCAA regional appearance. Akubeze earned her bid into the regional at the 2005 Conference USA Outdoor Championships on May 13 in Houston, Texas. Tianna Madison of the University of Tennessee won the long jump at the NCAA Mideast Regional with a mark of 21-04.75. The long jump was originally scheduled for Friday but was postponed due to heavy rain and lightning.
Akubeze was one of two Cardinal athletes competing at the regional meet joining junior Jennifer Hartig who set a new personal best in the pole vault on Friday with a mark of 12 feet, 6 inches and a 12th-place finish in her first-ever NCAA regional appearance.
The Cardinal track and field program will now enter the BIG EAST Conference beginning with the 2006 indoor season.
