OAK RIDGE, Tenn. - The University of Louisville rowing team opened the 2005 spring season with a strong showing against No. 24 ranked Minnesota Sunday.
The Cardinal crew lost the Varsity 8+ race to the Gophers by less than two seconds as U of L's time of 6 minutes, 41.53 seconds was just behind Minnesota's 6:40.32. U of L was nearly as close to pulling off a huge victory in the second Varsity 8+ race as the Gophers' time of 6:59.21 was just ahead of the Cards' 7:02.51.
"I felt like we competed really well against a very good team, especially in the Varsity 8 races," said U of L head coach Richard Ruggieri. "I feel like we had good speed today, and though there are certainly some areas we need to improve in, we're off to a good start."
In the Varsity 4+ race, Minnesota finished with a time of 7:48.15, followed by the Gophers' "B" crew with a time of 7:56.98 and the Cards were next at 8:03.46. The final race was the Novice 8+ race won by the Gophers with a time of 7:15.35. Minnesota's "B" boat had a time of 7:18.92 followed by U of L with a 7:42.86.
"With a spring trip coming up, we'll have a great opportunity to improve in some important areas," Ruggieri said. "But overall I'm happy with the aggressiveness and the technical side of our racing today."
Up next, the Cards will face No. 10 ranked Tennessee on March 26 in Knoxville, Tenn.
