
No. 11 Louisville Field Hockey Tops Providence 6-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - - The No. 11 ranked University of Louisville field hockey team defeated host Providence 6-1, in BIG EAST Conference action on Sunday, October 2 at the Friar Field Hockey & Lacrosse Complex in Providence, R.I. The Cardinals scored four unanswered goals in the first half to take control of the game, and improve to 10-3 overall and 2-1 in the league. The Friars fall to 4-9 overall and 0-1 in the BIG EAST.
The Cardinals got on the board early as sophomore Janelle Avila connected on her first goal of the afternoon just 1:25 into the game. Avila's goal was assisted by Jen Kastelic. Avila put the Cards ahead, 2-0, at the 20:54 mark on her second goal of the day off a feed from Jen Payne. Casey Diener scored Louisville's third goal of the afternoon 29:23 into the action as she connected off a pass from junior Jessica Javelet. Louisville finished off the half with a tally from freshman Lauren Schaefer with 19-seconds remaining on the clock to make the score, 4-0, at the break. Schaefer's goal was assisted by freshman Courtney Shepstone.
In the second half, Louisville kept the pressure on and added two more goals to take a 6-0 advantage. At 54:43, junior Lisa Wasser blasted a direct shot off of a penalty corner to give the Cardinals a 5-0 lead. Wasser's goal was assisted by Kastelic and senior Rachel Overton. Javelet netted the final goal of the day for Louisville at the 60:34 mark, assisted by sophomore Missy Briery.
The Friars scored their only goal of the day as junior Melissa McGow found the back of the cage, unassisted, at 63:15.
Sophomore goalkeeper Marie-Claire Heller registered two saves for Louisville. The Cardinals outshot the Friars 21-8 and held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Providence goalkeeper Stephanie Scavelli made nine saves for Providence in the cage. The Friars fall to 4-9 (0-1).
Louisville (10-3, 2-1) will play host top-ranked and three-time defending national champion Wake Forest (10-0) Saturday, Oct. 8 at Trager Stadium at 1 p.m.
