Nashville, Tenn. - The Louisville men's soccer team defeated Belmont 1-0 Wednesday evening in Nashville, Tenn. The Cardinals improve to 5-8-2 on the season while Belmont falls to 5-7-1.
"It was a tale of two halves," said head coach Tony Colavecchia. "We played pretty well in the first half and in the early stages controlled the game. We moved the ball around well and created a lot of chances. We were able to get the ball through by David Guzman off Gerard Voutier`s corner kick. But in the second half we were not the same team. Belmont put a lot of pressure on us in the second half. This is certainly the most improved Belmont team I have seen and the deserve a lot of credit. We were fortunate to come away with a win because we were out of sync in the second half. Steven DeGeorge made some good saves and the back four were very solid."
The Cardinal attack wasted no time in the first half. Freshman Gerard Voutier's shot on goal in the 6th minute was collected by the Bruin's goalkeeper Kyle Roelke. Then fifteen minutes later the Cardinals were on the board. Sophomore David Guzman scored off Voutier's corner kick in the 21st minute, giving him the game-winner. Louisville finished the first half with a 3-1 shot advantage over the Bruins and led 1-0 at the break.
The Louisville backfield held strong in the second half against the Belmont attack. The Bruins came out early with two shots on goal in the first 10 minutes. The defense held strong for its second consecutive shutout. Cardinal keeper Steven DeGeorge collected three saves while the backfield recorded a save as well. Belmont outshot the Cardinals 13-2 in the second half but could not get past the defense. Roelke finished with three saves.
The Cardinals will host Syracuse Saturday, Oct. 22 in Cardinal Park at 7:00 p.m. The game will be senior night for seniors Matt Neely, Tim Velten, Ryan Edwards, Michael Baughn, and Steven DeGeorge. Admission is free to Cardinal Park.
