Stephania Velazquez of Weston, Florida signed a National-Letter-of-Intent to continue her tennis career at the University of Louisville. She will join the Cardinals next fall as a freshman.
Velazquez, U of L's third signee, originally hales from Aruba and has extensive international playing experience. She has been ranked in the Top 300 in the world in juniors by the ITF (International Tennis Federation).
"Stephania (pronounced steff-ON-yah)has a great deal of experience internationally and she is a top player from her home country of Aruba," said U of L coach Greg Davis, whose team just completed its second straight 20-win season after reaching the Conference USA semi-finals. "I feel she's is a very athletic player who has not come close to reaching her potential on the court."
Davis cites Velazquez' attacking style of play and her aggressive play at the net as two parts of her game that caught his eye.
"We are really concentrating on finding players who are aggressive and can close out points at the net. She is particularly good at this skill," said Davis.
