LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Junior Jacey Hughes won the pole vault and set a new conference record to lead the University of Louisville women's track and field team at the Conference USA Outdoor Championship at Cardinal Park.
Hughes cleared 12 feet, 7.50 inches to set both a school and conference record in the win. The Utica, Ky., native broke her own school record by four inches and improved the C-USA mark by two inches. The win gives the Cardinals back-to-back wins in the event as Cindy Roberson won the title last year.
Senior Amanda Bell placed fourth in the 1500-meter finals with a personal-best time of 4:34.52. Bell also finished ninth in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:36.04, another personal record and the seventh best in school history.
Senior Kelly Faber finished seventh in the 100-meter hurdles finals with a time of 14.49 seconds. She had advanced to Saturday's finals after breaking her own school record in the preliminaries on Friday with a time of 14.36.
Faber also placed third in the heptathlon event with 4896 points. In the final event of the seven-event scored competition on Friday, Faber knocked three seconds off her personal-best in the 800-meter run (2:21.77) to climb from sixth to third.
Freshman Holly Geibel led the Cardinal throwers with a third-place effort in the javelin with a throw of 129-6.
Sophomore Emily Kost was the only Cardinal women's scorer during the first day. Kost placed fourth in the hammer throw with a personal-best throw of 157-4, the third best mark ever by a UofL sophomore.
Freshman Jill Andres placed eighth in the discus with a mark of 140-5, a new freshman record and the 10th best by a Cardinal.
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, senior Laine Hamman finished sixth with a time of 11:17.16, the second-best time in school history.
The Cardinals' 4x400-meter relay team placed eighth with a time of 3:52.30, the third-fastest time recorded by a UofL relay team in the event. The team consisted of freshman Kelly Ennis, sophomore Allissa Moore, Faber and junior Anita Winters-Dixon.
In the triple jump, junior Michele Burke recorded a personal-best mark of 37-11.50, the fifth-best in school history, to place eighth.
Junior Kelley Bowman tied for eighth in the high jump after clearing 5-4.25.
Junior Anita Winters-Dixon ran the sixth-best 200-meter dash time in school history (25.15) to place 15th in the preliminaries. Freshman Kelly Ennis also had a big day as she ran the sixth fastest time ever by a Cardinal in the 400-meter dash (57.91) to finish 16th in the preliminaries.
The Cardinals finished 11th overall in the championship with 40.33 points. Houston (121) edged TCU (120) by one point to win its fourth team title.
