
Kost, Hughes Win Events to Lead Women at Cardinal Open

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Emily Kost and junior Jacey Hughes each won events to lead the University of Louisville women's track and field team at the Cardinal Open Friday night at Cardinal Park.
During the evening, 10 meet records and six NCAA regional qualifying marks were set by the women, which included athletes from 24 schools.
Kost captured the hammer throw with a personal-best mark of 157 feet, 4 inches, the third best effort ever by a Cardinal sophomore. She also finished third in the shot put with a personal-best distance of 44-2.50 and tied for 10th in the discus at 129-4.
Hughes won the pole vault after clearing 11-5.75, six inches better than the runner-up finisher. The title was the sixth of her outdoor career.
In the 3000-meter steeplechase, senior Beth Wendt finished second with a personal-best time of 11 minutes, 29.95 seconds, the third best time in school history. Senior Laine Hamman also had a personal-best performance in the race with a seventh-place time of 11:49.16.
Aajah Showell set a freshman record in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 14.43 to place third. It was also the third fastest in school history.
In the 200-meter dash, junior Anita Winters-Dixon finished third in 25.24, while freshman Kelly Ennis was fifth at 25.61. Ennis also placed third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.24.
Junior Michele Burke tied a personal record in the triple jump at 36-4 to place third and set a PR in the long jump with a fifth-place mark of 17-1.25.
Freshman Holly Geibel also had a big evening as she placed third in the javelin with a throw of 127-3.
