LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The Louisville women's track and field team returns to action this weekend when they travel to Indianapolis for the Indy Relays. The two-day event begins Friday afternoon and concludes on Saturday. Hosted by Butler University, the competition will be held at the Indiana University Michael A. Carroll Track and Field Stadium.
Last Time Out...Cardinals Fare Well at Competitive Sea Ray Relays
Louisville had four top-10 finishes in just five events entered at the Sea Ray Relays in Knoxville, Tenn.
Senior Kelly Faber had the Cardinals' highest finish with a sixth-place effort in the heptathlon. Faber tallied 4,757 points during the two-day event, the third highest total in school history.
Freshman Holly Geibel had a season-best throw of 131 feet, two inches in the javelin to place eighth, while sophomore Emily Kost was 10th in the hammer throw with a mark of 149-0.
In the high jump, junior Kelley Bowman and senior Mindy Helman each cleared 5-6. Bowman tied for eighth and Helman was 12th due to tiebreakers based on the number of attempts at previous marks.
Junior Jacey Hughes cleared a season-best height of 11-11.75 in the pole vault to finish 11th. Sophomore Jennifer Hartig was 24th (10-6).
Bowman Reaches NCAA Regional Qualifying Status
Junior Kelley Bowman qualified for NCAA Regionals in the high jump for the second straight year when she cleared the qualifying mark Friday at the Texas Relays in Austin.
Bowman cleared 5 feet, 8 inches to place third in the event. She will advance to the NCAA Mid-East Regionals in Baton Rouge, La., in May. The height was less than one inch from her own school record of 5-8.75.
Showell Qualifies for USA Junior Nationals in Heptathlon
Aajah Showell qualified for the USA Junior National in the heptathlon after scoring 4,459 points at the Florida State Relays. The point total is a new U of L freshman record and is the ninth best mark in school history.
The Junior Nationals will be held June 24-27 in Buffalo, N.Y. To be eligible for the meet, athletes must meet predetermined standards and must be under the age of 20 in 2004.
Faber Sets 100m Hurdles Record; Heptathlon Mark in Reach
After twice coming within .01 of the school's 100m hurdles record, senior Kelly Faber finally broke it when she ran 14.53 at the Texas Relays.
Faber also tallied 4,886 points in the heptathlon at the Florida State Relays, the second highest total by a Cardinal and just 100 points from the record. The NCAA provisional mark is 5,000.
Ennis Has Solid Collegiate Debut
Freshman Kelly Ennis had a solid collegiate outdoor debut at the SIU Spring Classic with a third-place finish in the 400-meter dash. Ennis ran a time of 57.62 seconds, the fourth fastest time in school history. The Leonardtown, Md., native also placed sixth in the 200-meter dash with a time of 25.63.
