
Women's Basketball Defeats Detroit 69-54

Louisville, Ky. - Sophomore forward Missy Taylor scored a career- high 23 points, and sophomore Jazz Covington added 18 points and six rebounds to lead the U of L women's basketball team to a 69-54 win over the Detroit Titans Wednesday night in Freedom Hall.
Detroit opened the game with two straight three-point baskets to take an early 11-8 lead. The Cardinals also started hot early but cooled off considerably from the field as the half progressed.
Missy Taylor kept the Cards in the game by scoring 10 points in the game's first eight minutes and 12 of the teams first 15 points. The Titans maintained a small lead until Covington completed a three-point play at the 7:40 mark to give the Cardinals its first lead of the game at 18-17.
The Cards began to heat up as the first half unfolded, but hot shooting by the Titans kept them close at halftime. The Cards led 32-29 at the half, with the help of Taylor's 14 first half points. Detroit finished the first half shooting 52.4 percent with seven three-point baskets, to help them overcome 14 turnovers.
U of L came out of the locker room with some defensive fire, and was able to extend their lead to eight points just over three minutes into the second half. The Titans opened up ice cold from the field enabling the Cards to open the half with a 18-5 run over in the first eight minutes to build a 14 point lead (50-34) at the 11:17 mark.
Detroit went on a 12-4 run to get to within 54-46 with just over five minutes left to play. The Titans held the Cards to just one field goal over a seven minute stretch, but the eight point deficit proved to be as close as the Titans would get.
Louisville answered the Detroit run by holding the Titans to one field goal in a six minute stretch of the second half. Another three-point play by Covington with 2:25 remaining gave the Cards a 63-46 lead. Outscored 14-8 down the stretch, Detroit could not recover.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 52 percent from the field, a season-high. The Titans shot just 34.5 percent in the second half, to finish the game shooting 42 percent from the field. The Titans shot 40.9 percent from the three-point arc, while Louisville shot just 23.1 percent. The Cardinals outrebounded Detroit 34-23.
Louisville will be back in action as they host Western Kentucky in Freedom Hall on Sunday at 2:00 p.m.
