
Cardinals Fall in a Nailbiter to Indiana

The University of Louisville women's basketball team fell to Indiana 61-57 in Assembly Hall on Friday evening. Sophomore Jazz Covington led all scorers with 20 points while Missy Taylor finished with 14 and Jessica Huggins finished with 10. Indiana's Cyndi Valentin led the Hoosiers with 16 points.
The game was close in the first half, the Cardinals built 16-7 lead midway through the first half. The Hoosiers came back to tie the game at 28 at the half. Louisville finished the first half shooting 37.9 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from the three-point line. Indiana finished the half shooting 37.5 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from behind the arc. Indiana outrebounded Louisville 20-18 in the half.
Huggins scored the first six points for the Cardinals in the second half after missing most of the first half in foul trouble. The second half stayed close until Indiana used a 7-0 run to go ahead 58-51 with three minutes remaining. Covington managed a steal in the paint and Angel Bradley drove in for layup to cut into the Hoosier lead. Covington stole the ball again in the paint and dished ahead to Taylor for the fast break score.
With a minute left, Covington scored on a putback to cut the lead to one. Indiana's Valentin hit 2 of 2 from the line to put the Hoosiers up 60-57. Taylor's three-point attempt was deflected and Indiana recovered on the ball with two seconds remaining. Annika Boyd hit 1 of 2 from the line to seal the Hoosier win.
The Cardinals finished the game shooting 40.4 percent from the field and just 26.7 percent from behind the arc. Indiana finished the game shooting 41.2 percent from the field and 27.3 percent from behind the arc. The Hoosiers hit 16 of 21 from the free throw line and outrebounded the Cardinals 37-29.
Louisville will be back in action on Sunday in its home opener against Kentucky at 2:00 p.m. in Freedom Hall.
