LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville freshman forward Brian Johnson will undergo his third knee surgery in six months later in November and will miss the 2004-05 season.
"Our focus now is on getting Brian healthy," said U of L Men's Basketball Coach Rick Pitino. "This is a big blow to our team's front line depth."
Dr. Norman Scott, an orthopedic surgeon and team doctor for the New York Knicks, examined Johnson's recurrent knee problems last Saturday and will peform the surgery at an undetermined date later this month. Johnson's recuperative time will include several weeks without bearing any weight on the knee and he will be unable to play for the Cardinals this season.
A 6-9 forward from Suitland, Md., Johnson averaged 13.9 points and 9.3 rebounds as a senior at Oak Hill Academy in Mouth of Wilson, Va. last season, helping his team to a 38-0 record and the nation's top ranking in the USA Today high school poll.
