
Bustin named MAC Field Hockey Coach of the Year

MUNCIE, Ind. - - University of Louisville field hockey coach Pam Bustin was named the 2004 Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year after leading the Cardinals to a share of the 2004 regular season championship. Senior Kimberly Hughes and sophomores Jessica Javelet and Lisa Wasser were named to the MAC first team while senior Suzanne Irwin, junior Rachel Overton and freshman Marie-Claire Heller earned second team honors.
Bustin, who also earned Coach of the Year honors in 2001, led the team to its best MAC record (8-2) since U of L joined the league in 1994. In her seven years as Louisville's coach, the Cards have won two MAC regular season titles and a tournament championship. After winning the MAC tournament championship in 2003, the Cardinals clinched the first NCAA tournament berth in school history.
Hughes, a defender from Adelaide, Australia, is a four-year starter for the Cardinals. The co-vice captain is also a four-time All-MAC team member and was named Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year in 2001. She is currently third on the team with six goals and four assists for 16 points. Hughes has 20 career goals and her 17 assists place her second among U of L's career leaders. She has earned MAC Player of the Week honors three times, including once on October 3 of this year and was named to the Women'sfieldhockey.com honor roll on Oct. 4. She was also selected to play in the 2004 NFHCA Division I North/South Senior All-Star game on Nov. 20.
Javelet, a forward from Rancho Santa Fe, Calif., leads the team and the conference with 15 goals and is tied for 18th in the nation in goals scored. She is currently third on the school's list for single-season goals. Javelet's 39 points also lead the team, the MAC and place her tied for 20th in the country. Javelet currently stands tied for second on the school's list for single-season points. She also has a team-leading nine assists and is tied for second in the league in that category. Javelet earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week honors twice this season, on Sept. 6 and Oct. 4 and was named to the Women'sfieldhockey.com honor roll on Oct. 19.
Wasser, a midfielder from Dallas, Pa., is a 2004 team co-vice captain. The two-year starter has three goals and four assists for 10 points on the year.
Irwin, a forward from Louisville, Ky.'s Ballard High School is this year's field captain. She is currently second on the team with nine goals and five assists and has 16 career goals. She earned MAC Offensive player of the Week honors on Sept. 20 of this year and was named to the Women'sfieldhockey.com honor roll on Sept. 20.
Overton, a defender from Newbury Park, Calif., is a two-year starter for the Cardinals. She has one goal and three assists for five points.
Heller, a goalkeeper from Chapel Hill, N.C., carries a MAC-leading 1.90 goals against average and has picked up nine wins in the cage for the Cardinals. She posted her first shutout in U of L's 7-0 win over Miami on Oct. 8 at Trager Stadium.
The Cardinals (10-9, 8-2 MAC) earned a share of the MAC regular season crown and is the top-seed in the tournament. Louisville will play Ohio University Friday at noon at Ball State's Turf Field.
