Women's Basketball Wins Exhibition

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville women's basketball team defeated the Hoosier Lady All-Stars 65-52 in exhibition action Saturday night in Cardinal Arena. The Cardinals were led by sophomores Jazz Covington and Missy Taylor, each scoring 14 points. Missy Taylor also pulled down nine boards to tie senior guard Angel Bradley for the team lead.
"I was pleased with our defense in the first half," said head coach Tom Collen. "They made some adjustments in the second half and were able to get some open looks at the basket. That took some of our momentum away. I tried to play a lot of players tonight and we weren't able to keep the momentum on the floor. I was using this game to try to figure out who was ready to stay on the floor and who wasn't ready."
The Cardinals jumped out to an early 5-0 lead, but the Lady All-Stars fought back to take an 11-10 lead early in the half. The Cardinals then went on a 12-0 run behind some hot shooting and smothering defense to take a 22-10 lead.
The Lady All-Stars hung were able to hang in the game behind the play of Jamie Gray. However the Cards would ended the first half with a 37-20 lead.
The Cards outrebounded the Lady All-Stars 23-12 in the half and had superior bench play as the Cardinal reserves outscored their counterparts 12-0.
Both teams got off to somewhat of a slow start as the Lady All-Stars made only one field goal in the first eight minutes of the second half. The Cards opened up the half with a 13-4 run.
With 12 minutes remaining, the Cardinals had their biggest lead of 26 points. The Lady All-Stars got back into the game behind their three-point shooting. The finished the second half shooting 50 percent from behind the arc. The All-Stars battled back, cutting the Louisville lead to 13 points with just over three minutes remaining.
Louisville finished the game outrebounding the Lady Stars 44-30. The Cardinals finished the game shooting 41.1 percent from the field and 53.3 percent from behind the three-point line.
The Cardinals will tip off the season on Nov. 19 against Vermont in the Northbank Classic in Burlington, Vermont at 5:00 p.m.
