LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The University of Louisville men's cross country team and freshman runner Wesley Korir each remained perfect on the season following a fourth straight sweep of the team and individual titles at Saturday's Cardinal Classic at the U of L Shelby Campus.
The Cardinal men dominated the competition placing five runners in the top six spots to win the team title with 18 points, while IUPUI finished second in the field of 10 teams with 71 points. Morehead State was third with 108, followed by Middle Tennessee in fourth with 128 and Evansville in fifth with 129. Complete team and individual results for the 2004 Cardinal Classic can be found at www.alltraxtiming.com.
Korir, a native of Eldoret, Kenya, improved to a perfect 4-0 on the season after he covered the 8-kilometer course in 25 minutes, 24.84 seconds to finish just ahead of teammate Nurani Sheikh in second place in the field of 95 runners with a time of 25:26.42.
The Cards have now won four straight races to open the season following wins at the Greater Louisville Classic on Sept. 25, the Commodore Classic hosted by Vanderbilt on Sept. 11 and the Woodford Trials hosted by Kentucky on Sept. 3. Korir has been the Cards' top finisher at each event while earning first-place honors each time.
"We continue to improve and move forward with each meet," said U of L cross country head coach Ron Mann. "To be undefeated at this point in the season is a nice accomplishment, but the real test will be in two weeks at the Pre-Nationals.
"We're moving into the championship season and things will get much tougher as we continue to move forward, but we feel very good about where we're at right now."
Junior Tim Kaiser finished fourth with a time of 25:45.45, while sophomore Wes Seacat was fifth with a 25:54.85 and junior Kyle Bowling closed out the scoring for U of L in sixth with a time of 26:00.86. U of L will now have a week away from competition before the Pre-Nationals on Oct. 16 in Terre Haute, Ind., site of the 2004 NCAA Cross Country Championships set for late November.
