ATHENS, Ga. - Three members of the Louisville men's tennis team opened up the 2003 fall season at the Southern Intercollegiate Championship hosted by the University of Georgia. Other schools competing in the tournament include: Armstrong Atlantic, College of Charleston, Duke, East Tennessee State, Florida, Furman, Georgia, Georgia State, Georgia Tech, Jacksonville, Lander, Memphis, Mississippi State, Old Dominion, Ole' Miss, South Carolina, Stetson, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest, William & Mary and Winthrop.

Sophomore Jakob Gustafsson advanced to the semifinals of the Division III singles as he defeated Tennessee Tech's Christoh Lerch 6-2, 6-2; topped Georgia's Adam Van Loan 6-3, 6-3 and South Carolina's Heraldo Knorr 6-4, 6-4.

Junior Octavian Nicodim, competing in Division I singles, defeated Stetson's Christian Moe 6-2, 6-0 in the first round and fell to Georgia's Strahinja Bobusic 6-4, 7-5 in the second round.

In Division II singles, Senior Matt Mayer defeated Georgia Tech's Noah Tyler 6-1, 6-2 and went on to beat Florida's Jordan Dolberg 7-6(2), 5-7, 6-4 before falling to Luiz Carvalho of Mississippi State 6-4, 7-5.

The doubles team of Mayer and Gustafsson lost to William & Mary's Kelleher and Ward 8-4.
