LOUISVILLE, Ky. - University of Louisville softball coach Sandy Pearsall has announced the hiring of Karen Marr as an assistant coach. She will be working primarily with the pitching staff and assisting in game and practice preparation.
Marr comes to U of L from New South Wales, Australia where she was the National Battery Development Coach for the Australian Softball Federation for the past two years. Prior to that, she was a pitching and catching specialist coach with the New South Wales State teams from 1994-2001. She was selected as National Junior Team Battery Coach in 1999 and served as the battery coach for the New South Wales Development squads in 1994 and 1996. During her tenure with the Australian Softball Federation, Marr helped guide seven U-19 and U-16 teams to national championships.
Marr's coaching experience extends beyond Australia. She just finished a stint at the West Coast Academy in Vancouver in 2003. In 2000, she coached the Chinese Olympic Squad and Elite Sport Schools. Her 2002 U-19 Australian team competed in the Canada Cup. In 1999, her U-19 Australian team participated in the Junior Girl's World Championship in Taiwan.
The Sydney native has completed several Australian Softball Federation certification courses, including Level 3, the highest level of training for coaches. Marr has also served as a lecturer for the Australian National Softball Federation from 1998-2003.
"We are very excited to have Karen Marr here at U of L," said Pearsall. "She brings vast experience in pitching and catching at an international level and will help us reach our goal of winning a conference championship and competing in the NCAA tournament. Australia is one of the world powers in softball and has produced some very strong pitchers and hitters. Several Australian pitchers have come to the United States to play in college and led their teams to the College World Series and national championships."
