Softball Set for Conference USA Championship

The University of Louisville softball team earned a No.4 seed in the Conference USA Softball Championship and will play fifth-seeded Southern Miss Thursday, May 8 at 1 p.m. The tournament will be held May 8-10, hosted by the University of Houston at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Louisville (12-11, 21-24) took the series when the teams met earlier in the season, winning the last two games by scores 2-0 each. Southern Miss (12-12, 27-28) won the first game 2-0. The Cardinals are led by junior Shannon Nord who is batting .344 and has 11 stolen bases. Senior Keola Calderon has also been solid this season, leading the team in RBI (22) and ranking second in batting average (.322). The Golden Eagles have relied on junior righthander Jessica Holaway, who leads the team with a 1.93 ERA.
The championship will be a double-elimination tournament, with the champion receiving the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The championship game on May 10 will be televised by affiliates of the Conference USA Television Network. Don Russell will announce the play-by-play with Amy Prichard, providing the commentary. The game will be telecasted live on WFTE-TV Louisville.
