
Four Louisville Softball Players Earn All-Conference Honors

HOUSTON - Junior Shannon Nord was named to the first team while seniors Keola Calderon and Nicole Sparks earned second team honors and Michelle Vasquez was named to the all-freshman team as Conference USA announced its major award winners and all-league teams. The all-league teams were chosen by C-USA's nine head coaches, and announced at its pre-tournament banquet Wednesday evening at the Athletics/Alumni Center on the University of Houston campus. The 2003 Conference USA Tournament, hosted by Houston, will take place May 8-10 at the Cougar Softball Stadium.
Nord, a Jeffersonville, Ind., native leads the team with a .344 batting average and 11 stolen bases and boasts a 1.000 fielding percentage as the Cardinals' leftfielder. She is third on the school's career list for stolen bases.
Calderon, an Orcutt, Calif. native is a team captain and four-time all-conference team member. She is second on the team with a .323 batting average and leads the Cards with 23 RBI. Calderon holds the school record for career RBI, runs scored, doubles, triples and games started.
Sparks, is U of L's second baseman. The Chino, Calif. native is a three-time all-conference team member. She has five double and 10 RBI and has a .990 fielding percentage in league play. Sparks holds the school record for career assists and is second on the list for games started and sacrifice hits.
Vasquez, a freshman shortstop from Rancho Cucamonga, Calif., is batting .270 in conference play. She was named C-USA Hitter of the Week during the season.
The Cardinals (21-24, 12-11) will open the tournament against fifth-seeded Southern Miss (27-28, 12-12) Thursday, May 8 at 1 p.m. The championship game of the tournament on May 10 at 2 p.m. (CST) will be televised by affiliates of the Conference USA Television Network.
